Shadow of the Tomb Raider gives Lara Croft a sharper edge than ever before. Facing heavily armed enemies in dense jungle environments, she survives not by charging in, but by becoming part of the landscape. Whether you prefer pure stealth or a mix of silence and firepower, these techniques will keep you alive.
Become invisible: mud and vines
Two of the game’s most important stealth tools come from the environment itself:
- Mud camouflage. Coat Lara in mud and she becomes much harder to spot when pressed against muddy walls or crouching in dark areas.
- Vine-covered walls. Lara can blend into walls covered in vines, waiting for enemies to pass — or striking from cover as they get close.
Combined with tall grass and bushes, these tools let you move through most encounters without ever being seen.
Control the battlefield with distractions
Enemies investigate noises, which means you decide where they look. Throw objects to pull guards away from a group, then pick off stragglers one by one. Patience is your best weapon: watch patrol routes, wait for the right moment and only commit when you are sure no one else is watching.
Use Survival Instincts to read the room
Survival Instincts highlights enemies and shows which ones can be taken down without alerting others. Check it before every takedown. A silent kill that is spotted by a nearby guard can turn a perfect stealth run into a firefight in seconds.
Strike from above
Vertical space is a huge advantage. Perches and tree branches let Lara drop onto unsuspecting enemies, and ropes can be used for dramatic hanging takedowns. When an area feels too crowded on the ground, look up.
Choose skills that fit your style
Lara’s abilities are split across three skill trees — Seeker, Warrior and Scavenger. For a stealth-focused build, prioritise skills that improve takedowns, chain silent kills, reveal more information through Survival Instincts and unlock tools that create chaos without revealing your position. Challenge tomb rewards can strengthen these abilities even further.
Craft your advantage
The jungle is full of resources. Gather herbs and materials to craft healing items and special mixtures that boost Lara’s senses, focus or resilience. Upgrading your weapons and gear at camps also makes a noticeable difference when stealth breaks down and you have to fight your way out.
When things go wrong
Even the best plans fail. If you are spotted, break line of sight, retreat into cover and let enemies lose track of you. Many encounters allow you to slip back into stealth once guards stop searching. Do not be afraid to reset an encounter by retreating rather than fighting a losing battle.
Respect the jungle
Shadow of the Tomb Raider’s environments are as dangerous as its enemies. Piranhas, eels and traps punish careless movement, especially underwater. Move with purpose, scan your surroundings and treat every new area as a puzzle as much as a battlefield.
Master these techniques and you will feel exactly how the game wants you to feel: not hunted, but the hunter.
